Annealing

By means of the precisely targeted electron beam the boundary layer of a metal component is heated to, and maintained at, a specific temperature, followed by self-quenching. In the case of steels the aimed-for temperature is often just below the austenitizing temperature (approx. 700°C) in order to attain shortest possible process times. The objective is the reduction of undesirable stress patterns (tempering, low-stress annealing) and/or structural changes such as a better distribution of alloying elements so as to improve for instance the forming properties (solution annealing, recrystallization annealing). These processes often take only seconds, or even fractions thereof.
