Electron Beam Source

The structure of an electron beam source corresponds to the principle of the triode tube. Electrons escape from a directly or indirectly heated cathode due to thermal emission in vacuum. High-voltage, as described above, is applied between the cathode and the anode. The space between cathode an anode is called distance of acceleration. Between the cathode and the anode the negatively charged control grid (in relation to the cathode) is located – called Wehnelt grid. It is used for controlling or stopping the beam current intensity. An important element is the insulator ensuring flash-over resistance and heat removal of the cathode heating.
