Engraving

Producing certain structural surface patterns (wells, grooves) through flash vaporization of material. The purposes served include enhanced lubricant retention or, alternatively, a defined increase in surface roughness for enhanced friction. Engraved surfaces can also yield improved gating characteristics (mechanical clamping of the casting material). These processes often take only a fraction of a second.
