High Voltage

The electron beam consists of particles accelerated in an electric field (electrons).

In practice, the accelerating voltage is divided into three ranges:

Low voltage: < 60 kV
Medium voltage: 60-90 kV
High voltage: 90-150 kV

The structure of an electron beam generator corresponds to the principle of the Braun tube. A heated cathode releases electrons in vacuum. This process is based on thermal emission. High voltage, as described above, is applied between the cathode and the anode. The space between cathode and anode is called distance of acceleration.
The high voltage does not only influence the beam power but also the focal length. Consequently, the voltage stability (high voltage ripple, long-term stability) is an important criterion for the quality of an electron beam machine.
