Vacuum
Usually, electron beam welding is carried out under vacuum. In this process special vacuum pumps are used for generating the different vacuum types.
A distinction is made between:
Low vacuum up to 10-² mbar
During welding at this pressure range heavy soiling of the chamber occurs.
Medium vacuum from 10-² to 5x10-4 mbar
(normally sufficient for welding steel, aluminium and copper)
Minimal value that does not have a considerable influence on the welding process.
High vacuum more than 5 x 10-4 mbar
(for reactive materials such as niobium and titanium)
