Partially Hardened Camshafts for High Performance Engines

The partial electron beam hardening of cams and camshafts, which has been tested on pro-beam machine systems in large-series production for almost one decade, is only one example for the application of this local hardening procedure.

In this process the wear resistance is increased only in those places where it is actually needed. That is, only as much heat is supplied to the component as absolutely necessary. Thus, possible distortions are considerably reduced.

Due to the use of hardness parameters that are adapted to the contour it is possible to harden the surface areas subject to wear of already finshed components. This is carried out in a high-quality manner ensuring extremely low distortion and very little rework – at the end of the production chain.
